Ah Mother’s Day, that one day of the year when it feels like the universe is universally telling you to relax, treat yourself and give yourself a pat on the back for being a mum to someone. Personally, in my family, through the generations, the modern tradition of breakfast in bed is embraced and enjoyed by all. The way we currently represent Mother’s Day is not how it has been through the ages though. Apparently Mother’s Day traces back to ancient Roman times where festivals were held, and offerings were made, at the temple of Cybele – a mother goddess.
Although we may not hold festivals these days, Mother’s Day is still a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the mother figures in our world. And there are so many fantastic ways to show your appreciation and care. As I’ve said, the traditional breakfast in bed is a winner in my home, but there are a plethora of other things we can do to make the day truly special.
Now, I’m a big fan of flowers all year round, and an offering of flowers to those special people in your life on Mother’s Day is a pretty much guaranteed winner. Here’s a little tip – if you are in Melbourne, check out the beautiful fresh flower and gift options at Your Flower Fix, they are one of my favourite suppliers for flowers and will not disappoint! And if you want to add something more enduring why not pair a beautiful bunch of flowers with an equally beautiful piece of jewellery which they can wear every day and be reminded of how special they are.
Jewellery can be a very symbolic offering of appreciation and gives you the option of choosing something that really reflects your mother’s energy. Rose quartz which is known as one of the love stones is always a good go to, but if you are looking for something a little different, Amethyst which represents intuition and peace, Citrine for creativity and abundance, Carnelian for balance and motivation and aquamarine which represents happiness and serenity, are just a few of the many options out there. My advice is to see what speaks to you when you are thinking about your mother figure and follow your instincts for an enduring and symbolic gift.
And let’s not forget taking time out to appreciate Mother Earth and all she offers us also. So maybe spend some time taking a walk, or sitting in a park or garden, to connect and give gratitude to her too.
So, Happy Mother’s Day to all you mums out there, and those who play a nurturing caring role to others, and Mother Earth. May you enjoy a day of joy, love, and pampering.
